The fiftys where an era of change, both for man and machine. For me it heralded the end of the transatlantic liners. And many of the men who sailed in them.
In particular the Cunard Yanks.
As we edged into the sixtys speed took over from leisure and pleasure
Planes were crossing the oceans in hours, instead of days and the time of the great liners were numbered
I remember fondly the Britannic. With her sleek lines and Art Deco style, she was like a huge yacht
Personally, I always thought it looked better than the Caronia which was considered to be years ahead of its time as a passenger liner
The Britannic had her maiden voyage in 1930. Liverpool to New York about 1934 she went on the London to New York run and stayed on it till the war started.
During the war, the Britannic with her sister ship the Georgic and almost all of the other liners were troop carriers and didn't come back into transatlantic service
Until 1948
Back then on the Liverpool to New York run. In the winter she would do cruises to the Caribbean and later to the Mediterreanean.
The ships crew were mainly Liverpool men. She was so popular with the crew that a great number of them stayed on her for years.

Georgic

"GEORGIC"

The "Georgic" was a sister ship to the "Britannic"...built in 1931 she was an improvement on the "Britt" in as much as her decor... and a slight change in her super structure...the latter wasn't very noticeable... She joined the "Britt" on the New York run in 1932...first from Liverpool... then Southampton and London...until 1939...These were her best years as a transatlantic liner... afterwards... it seems... it was all downhill... she was never the same...She started the war ...like all of the liners as a troop ship... being converted to carrying I believe up to 3000 men... in 1941 she was bombed while carrying troops to the middle east...She was burnt out... and beached to stop her from sinking...The following year she was floated and towed to India for repairs...and in 1943 was able to return to Liverpool under her own steam...then to Harland and Wolf to be rebuilt as a troopship again... I think that's when she lost her second funnel and mast...

From then on she was carrying troops until 1948... she then went to Tyneside for another refitting...making her a one class ship for the emigrant runs to Australia and New Zealand...on the outward bound trips... picking up troops again... from Hong Gong... and Korea... on the return voyages...In 1950 the Georgic... after another refitting... returned to the Southampton to New York run... as a one class tourist ship...but with the chopping and changing she had suffered...she was in a terrible condition...and couldn't do the winter cruises...this lasted until 1954 when she was chartered out... I think... too carry emigrants and troops once more...Her final voyage was as a troop ship at the end of 1955...in 56 she was scrapped...She wasn't the luckiest of ships... but is still talked of fondly by the many who sailed on her...particularly the lads who found her... as "The Last Chance Saloon"... you could often get a job on her after your V,N.C.... or your sacking... from other ships... there always seemed to be a berth on the " Georgic" didn't there... here's a few faces from "The Last Chance" saloon...see if you remember any of them.

Here's the" X Factor" circa 1955...Eat your heart out Simon Cowelll

The "Georgic" late thirties looking as good as she was ever going to be on the Liverpool to New York run... Look at the following pictures... you can see how far ahead of most other liners of her time she was

Cocktail Lounge on "Georgic"... magnificent... showing the Influence of the Art-Deco school in furnishing public rooms

Another example of superb taste and class... one of the lounges On the "Georgic"

A first class cabin...again beautifully done out... with veneered panelling and picturesque inlay of flowers and oriental Scenes

Johnny Redhead and Freddy Deveraux on the "Georgic" 1953

Ronnie Orchard...Kenny Smith...Ritchie Barton... A.N.Other "Georgic" May 1955 I think it was the next to last voyage...
