Hi...as you probably know...I have a great collection of photographs of Liverpool seamen from the forties...fifties...and sixties....these have been given to me by the lads in the pictures...or the guy who took the picture... many of my old shipmates...These are of my time at sea...my memories...and theirs...But now and then I receive one that is from another time...another era...A picture that takes you back...to an incident that was traumatic and sad at the time... This is such a picture...and I wonder...as this was a Liverpool ship...sailing on the Liverpool to New York run...there is a good chance that one or more of the lads in the picture came from Liverpool...It is the ...R.M.S. "Lusitania" Engineers Football Club...(Winners of the Challenge Cup...1911-12) You will notice that the officers have the prefix Mr. before their name...the lads in the team do not...

Three years after this picture was taken...on May 7th 1915..."the Lusitania" was sunk by a German submarine with a loss of 1198 lives...out of 1959 crew and passengers...it was the biggest loss of life since the Titanic... So you look at this...and wonder...where they on the ship when it was sunk...did any of them survive...are there any children... which I doubt... or grand children of these lads around ...I have asked the chap who sent me the picture to see if there is any history with it...but being an ex-seaman...and knowing how much football means to the lads at sea...then...and in my time...this old picture has a great deal of poignancy...

Hi.... here are a group of pictures i believe from the early fifties... on the Franconia and in the Market Diner ... I can only put a name to one or two of them ... if anyone can shed a light on the others... I would be delighted...R.B.

Crew members in the pig...'The Franconia' early fifties... Dave Blundell... front right... looks half asleep to me... either that... or the barkeeper hadn't watered the beer that night...

Here are a group of boys in the diner.. again in the fifties... the guy on the right seems to have dave blundell's problem...

Same place... the Diner... same time I think ... boy ... where did they get those shirts...

More lads in the pig.. again the 'Franconia'.. recognise Gerry Rooney ... kenny Smith .. and Lawless ... Looks like the dart team....

Three more of the lads in the Diner .. full glass's ... looking smart ... Thats more like it

Gerry Ashton and shipmates ... same place ... the Diner... about the same time to... I think...

I got a winner... at least that's what I think he is saying... looks happy... doesn't he... But who?

Mr Rooney again... with friends.. ' Franconia' early 50's I thinbk ... I was on her in 53.. but cannot place anybody else .. mind you... I couldn't tell you what i had for breakfast....
